Luigi Roni Founder and Artistic Director
Luigi Roni was born in Calamoni in the Vergemoli Comune (Lucca). He voice trained initially with Adriana Pizzorusso in Lucca, gaining a diploma at the Music Institute of Lucca. At the age of 22 he won the Adriano Belli contest at Spoleto and he made his debut at Spoleto in the role of Mestiphole in Faust, by Gounod. Shortly afterwards he sang this role again in Florence and Lucca. At a very young age he made his debut at the Rome Opera theatre with Aida and again at Caracella during the spring. He sang Ernani at Pisa, Don Carlo at Piacenza, Ernani at Fidenza, the Barber of Seville at Lucca and at many other theatres which had a tradition of presenting great opera. In 1996 he debuted at La Scala in the role of the grand inquisitor in Don Carlo under the direction of Claudio Abbado. He returned to la Scala every year up until 2010. For more than forty years he worked under the direction of some of the greatest conductors and directors.
He sang in the most famous theatres in Italy and the world. His last performance was at the Metropolitan in 2016. Tokyo, Moscow, Amsterdam, Oslo, London, Paris, Berlin, Bonn, Copenhagen, Madrid, Lisbon, Zurich, Geneva, North and South America, Johannesburg, Pretoria are the extent of his performances.
In 2000 he formed the itinerant music festival, The Serchio delle Muse, in the Garfagnana, in the province of Lucca.
During his 20 years as artistic director of The Serchio delle Muse, he attracted many artists of international fame to our region. He never accepted payment for his work as he did it for his love of the music, the people and the Garfagnana, to which he was always very attached. Luigi was a great artist and an exceptional person, a man of great energy and goodness. He died from Corona virus on the 26th march, 2020.
